D vs B

Can someone explain to me the main difference in the D and B features of the LEAF. Excuse my ignorance

The D mode is your typical drive mode, while B will change the level of regen motor braking. This will affect the amount of electricity that is generated without the use of your brakes. It will also slow the car down significantly, similar to downshifting.

For the most part you'll be using the standard Drive mode for freeway use and the B mode for inner city. You'll recuperate a significant amount of electricity with both engine and braking regen engaged.

Best to give both a try in a parking lot just so you aren't surprised the first time you're in B mode and regenerative braking kicks in.
